For all power plant operators – a unique, but vital process measurement

The new LANCOM 200 is the latest portable gas analyser from LAND Instruments International. This unique instrument measures sulphuric acid dewpoint temperature – a unique but vital process measurement. This measurement technique was pioneered by LAND over 40 years ago, and is more important today than it has ever been.

Optimise Fuel Additives
In Process Control applications, where high cost fuel additives are injected into the fuel before the boiler to reduce downstream SO3 emissions, the Lancom 200 reports concentrations of SO3. Controlling the use (and great expense) of these additives can be better made with the LANCOM 200.

Monitor SO3 in an ESP
Similarly, where additives are used to improve ESP performance, and particular fly ash collection efficiency, the LANCOM 200 can successfully monitor SO3 slip, thus reducing acid aerosol emissions (blue plume).

Prevent Air Heater Fouling
The common problem of air heater fouling on most coal-fired power plants can be overcome by monitoring the sulphuric acid dewpoint temperature, subsequently maintaining the flue gas temperature above this fouling temperature (dewpoint). The ability to operate the plant with a safety margin can prevent massive long-term plant corrosions and associated maintenance costs.

Monitor Acid Smuts
Acid smut and aerosol emissions are an environmental disaster for any plant. The LANCOM 200 allows the acid content to be carefully monitored; it can report the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) for compliance applications.

The LANCOM 200 is a portable instrument with multiple benefits. It uses a simple measurement technique, is easy to operate and being portable can be used in various locations around the plant.

Wide ranging system fights fire risk at all points of the process

Coal Fire Detection   The Land Coal Fire Detection system is one which provides solutions for the important problem of damaging plant fires and explosions simultaneously at many stages of the coal handling, grinding and storage process. It targets those areas susceptible to hotspots and deflagration and so provides plant operators with a comprehensive means of detecting and stopping these dangers from incurring the huge financial losses of repairs, replacements, downtime as well as danger to personnel.

The products in the coal fire detection range comprise of a Mill Fire Detector, Railcar Fire Detector, Conveyor Fire Detector, IR Coal Fire monitor, Coal Pile Fire Detector and portable thermal imager, providing a complete fire detection service.

This detection system leaves no room for error, providing constant and exhaustive surveillance to combat the risk of fire which, despite safety guidelines on the handling and storage of coal, is still a prevalent problem. Factors such as coal type, age, composition, storage conditions or processing method can increase the risk of combustion and a recent report claimed there was at least one pulveriser explosion everyday. The innovative fire protection system combines infrared and combustion technology to provide a range with a diverse approach to tackling fire prevention including both gas detection and temperature sensing.

The coal fire detection system is specifically designed to withstand the harsh, corrosive conditions of coal processing. However, it is versatile and can be just as effective in a wide range of other applications, such as the storage of organic matter, pulp and paper mills, refineries and many more industrial facilities where there is a risk of fire. LAND are offering a solution to a costly and devastating problem, with early detection before fire causes any damage, hidden risks are exposed early.

Fighting Coal mill fires before they start

As part of the new Coal Fire Detection system from LAND, the Mill Fire Detector- a highly sensitive rapid response CO monitor- addresses and successfully prevents the danger of serious fire and explosions due to the rapid heating of stagnant coal inside pulverising mills. The CO detector is the fastest and most effective way of recognising hidden dangers and providing an early warning of the risk of fire.

Other products in the coal fire detection range include a Coal Pile Fire monitor, Conveyor Fire Detector, IR Coal Fire monitor, Railcar Fire detector and portable thermal imager, providing a complete fire detection service.

The Mill Fire Detector is simple to install and can be applied to both horizontal and vertical mills (typically positioned on the classifier outlet) or in silos and bins, where it continuously monitors CO levels with dual sensors which constantly self-check and feature auto-calibration. An alarm provides advance warning of the onset of combustion before damage can be caused and can be set site-specifically to suit operating conditions and to compensate for externally introduced CO.

The product is very low-maintenance, specifically designed to withstand the tough conditions of the coal process. The analyser features fast responding measurement technology and has a measuring range of 0-4000ppm.

One significant strength of the product is its adaptability to the customer's needs. A twin stream system is available so that two points on a single mill or two different mills can be simultaneously monitored and installation costs kept to a minimum. The detector is also suitable for use on silos or conveyors.

The Mill Fire Detector is a reliable, accurate and easy to maintain method of providing peace of mind and saving the expenses of replacements, repairs and downtime and can even reduce insurance premiums.

Detector tackles expensive risk of fire during coal transportation

The risk of fire at points in the process where coal is moved is great due to the friction and dust produced. Increased further by factors such as the growing use of highly volatile Powder River Basin coal, the danger of self-ignition due to oxidation cannot be neglected. With their new detector LAND recognise the transfer of coal from railcar to plant as a susceptible point.

LAND have developed effective infrared temperature scanning technology to combat the risk of hotspots entering the plant unnoticed and causing costly and dangerous damage. The Railcar Fire Detector is a new horizontally mounted trackside line scanner and processor, released as part of the Coal Fire Detection system. It covers the entire width of the coal fall (with a built in laser to accurately define scan plane and angle) and picks up hotspots as they fall from the railcar into a trackside hopper triggering an alarm.

Other products in the Coal Fire Detection range are a Mill Fire Detector, Conveyor Fire Detector, IR Coal Fire monitor, Coal Pile Fire Detector and portable thermal imager, providing a complete fire detection service.

This entirely automated process saves costs and man-hours as well as reducing insurance premiums and improving plant safety. The railcar fire detector allows high confidence in the safety of stored material due to its ability to view all of the coal and pick up very small hotspots. Moreover this product is easy to install with no additional software or hardware required and a simple single cable connection between scanner and processor.

Why risk a damaging but avoidable fire when LAND can give greater confidence and spot possible dangers before they get out of control within the plant?

Stopping fire risks in their tracks with Conveyor Fire Detector

LAND have developed a Conveyor Fire Detector for reducing the costs of damage due to coal fire or explosions as coal is transported throughout the plant, a dangerous point of the process particularly when highly volatile Powder River Basin coal is used.

Other products in the coal fire detection range include a Mill Fire Detector, Conveyor Fire Detector, IR Coal Fire monitor, Coal Pile Fire Detector and portable thermal imager, providing a complete fire detection service.

The conveyor monitoring system- the smallest high-speed scanner available- scans the coal as it passes along the belt preventing smouldering coal moving further into the plant by triggering alarms when customer-set temperature thresholds are reached.

This conveyor fire prevention engineering is designed to monitor the entire width of the conveyor. Very small hotspots which would not be picked up by a single point system are detected and multiple hotspots can be detected simultaneously. The high resolution measurement produced is an accurate and reliable surveillance of all the coal passing through the plant and gives a rapid response to any dangers.

This product not only minimises fire risk by improving the safety system of the plant but reduces plant operating costs. It is an automated system, cutting out man-hours and it reduces damage and downtime costs, maximising belt-life and plant productivity by stopping problems before they incur expense.

The scanner is very easily installed with a number of temperature measurement ranges available. This product is designed to suit the customer's needs above all, its settings able to be tailored to specific plant conditions.

The Conveyor Fire Detector requires very little maintenance, designed to withstand the tough conditions of the coal transportation process.

Keeping Coal Stockyard fires in check with continuous monitoring

As part of the Coal Fire Detection System Land have developed the Coal Pile Fire Detector to tackle the problematic storage of coal in large and difficult to access facilities. The hotspot detection system mounted at a suitable viewing point is able to scan a very large area for dangerous hotspots, its pan and tilt mechanism providing great flexibility and a wide range of view. A clear display on a remote PC is produced which gives real-time thermal images, allowing for immediate action in the case of danger and continuing assessment of the success of this action.

Other products in the coal fire detection range include a Mill Fire Detector, Conveyor Fire Detector, IR Coal Fire monitor, Railcar Fire detector and portable thermal imager, providing a complete fire detection service.

The risk of unnoticed hotspots developing into coal fires or explosions is greatly reduced by this comprehensive surveillance which is highly sensitive and able to pick up small hotspots from a large distance. It also features an automatic daytime/night time switching so that coal piles are never left unwatched, and hotspot image saving provides indications of high risk areas, which can then be targeted in future scanning.

Additional examples of this product's ability to be shaped to the customer's needs are the site-specific temperature range settings, enabled by the comprehensive image analysis software and the range of mounting and environmental accessories. However the product still maintains a fully automatic operation which saves costs and man-hours and requires minimal maintenance due its robust sealed housing.

The LAND Coal Pile Fire Detector is an invaluable asset which prevents the extensive damage and cost that coal pile fires can cause. It saves maintenance, man-hours and false alarm costs with its warning settings. It is a continuous, comprehensive and compact product which can be configured to ideally suit the individual application's needs.
